Cancer Haircuts
I’ve just made a comment over at “Cocktails with Kevin“, but felt compelled to add the comment here, in the My Story section:
I debated getting my hair all cut off the minute I was diagnosed, decided against it and to wait and see.
I’ll never forget being at a friends birthday party 24 hours after being discharged from a 6 day neutropenic trip (in the second week of my first 3 week cycle), and my partner looking at me and saying “Stay, very, very still”, nobody will notice. As we left the restaurant a little pile of my hair was left - I think putting gel in it probably caused it to decide it was time to get rid.
The next morning I got in the shower, great it was just falling out (no pain - I could just pull and it came away), but not everywhere - just on top. Great I though, I’ll stay under the water until it stops coming out!
But it didn’t stop and 40 minutes later and the plug hole emptied several hundred times it was still coming out.
I got out of the shower and looked in the mirror, hmmmm the mad monk look was not one that suited me! Rang my other half in a bit of a state, and she said “I’ll get rid when I get home”. I couldn’t wait, I didn’t want her to see this!
Out came the trimmers and the whole lot went into a carrier bag. My baseball cap became my new hair for the day (and when I was out for the coming months - Winter Chemo is a sod!!).
All in all, a bit of a hair-raising experience! It’s grown back now (a year on), but I keep it a lot shorter (I always fancied trying it really short but was never sure - that choice was taken out of my hands!).
